Reflection #16 American Period

Katie’s Blog;

Katie did a great job summarizing the historical background of the Victorian period.  I like that she uploaded pictures that shows how people from Victorian era used to dress.  Just like the "day in life" assignment, I think it is very important to learn these "period" lifestyles to understand what influenced development of their design styles. 

Ali’s Blog;

Ali focused on a broad range of  American period design styles along with their political and historical background.  I enjoyed reading her blog and appreciate how she mentioned that mass production of furniture caused handcrafted designs to be of less valued than it used to be.   

America - Victorian Period

Victorian Period (1840 – 1880)

Architecture in this era is known for its very elaborate, romantic, and emotional works.  The architecture of a house during this period would often reflect the wealth of the owner.  Houses were very large with many small rooms, each with a particular function in each of them.  The exterior of houses were often brightly colored with false fonts and false chimneys.  The interiors were dark with heavy drapes, dark wood, dark wall paper, and hard wood flooring.  Many houses had two hallways and two staircases; one grad for company, and one plain for the servants or children.  The Victorian style can still be seen in many places today.

Furniture;

Black walnut and rosewood were the commonly used materials for furniture of the Victorian style.  Carving, inlay of brass were frequently applied in their furniture design.  I think the furniture designs of this time period were well-reflected in the architectural designs.  They were very complex, elaborate, and somewhat emotional in appearance.
